“THE HISTORY OF EL TORREMOLINOS”

Back in 1932 a great football fan, Mr. Miguel Cerdán in that time owner of a bar called “La Perla” located in Plaza Costa del Sol, along with another great fan who lived in Torremolinos and was carpenter by profession at Tejar de los Morenos, Mr. Mata decided to create a football team in Torremolinos city. In those days, there was no local league or similar football competitions. The matches were arranged between groups of fans who carried the team’s expenses travel. This new team (C.F. Torremolinos) with Mr. Miguel Cerdán as President and Mr. Mata as first coach, was staffed mainly by committed fans such as Rafael Quintana (R.I.P.), Luis Pérez, Maximino Serrano, Luis Guillet, Marieta, Mendoza and Navajita, among other remarkable figures, with the latter being the great star of the team, considered owner of exceptional reflexes as goalkeeper in Malaga. This team represented Torremolinos city at all town fairs, as was customary in that time. On the other hand, we had teams like C.D. Tabaco, Lineal, Vélez C.D, Coín, Alhaurino and Fuengirola, being the most traditional one between all of them, our C.F. Torremolinos.

In 1942 due to the war, the C.F. Torremolinos dissolves and a new stage in Torremolinos football begins and where the C.D. Torremolinos appears. This team was founded by Mr Antonio Moya and Rafael Quintana as coach, both well-known soccer fans that started a new era, firstly by enlisting players who were still bound to C.F. Torremolinos. Figures like José Expósito, Cristóbal Quintana, Andrés Quintana, Juanito Martín, most of them Torremolinos residents.

Around the 1950s was a brilliant period of time for this team. The squad had some gifted players, owners of good techniques that even played for other high performing teams. Players like Enrique García (R.I.P.), his brother Ricardo, Pepe Quintana, Paquito Quintana, Benítez, Miguel Quesada and the goalkeeper Cristóbal Del Cid, among others.

The team was taking shape even more, coaching young football players, keeping some of the names mentioned above, but strengthening the original squad with new members like Pepito Ruiz (R.I.P.), Núñez, Bruna, Miguelín, Rubio (from Campamento Benítez).

With all these players, some from Torremolinos, others from Fuengirola and some others from Malaga, the C.D. Torremolinos faced each and every afternoon, sport competitions previously scheduled with teams such as Perchel, López Pinto, Rosaleda, Trinitaria, Fuengirola, Churriana, Campo de Aviación, Huelin, Malagueño, meaning, a large number of football teams, some from Malaga and others from surrounding towns. All of them formed the Local League that was gaining notoriety by the emergence of new football teams.

After some incidents that happened at the “El Pozuelo” Municipal Football Field, the C.D. Torremolinos was forced to cease activities, making a comeback the following year. This team lasted for a little while, because the foundation of the new Juventud de Torremolinos was taking form.

The fans of that time surely remember the exciting moments of each match. Our team playing against important rivals from capital city, such as Fernández Requena, López Pinto, no matter the circumstances, it was a compromise. Sometimes even our players had to pay the travel expenses for the rival team. That was sheer passion!

The history of the Juventud de Torremolinos C.F. as we know today is not very old. This team was founded in 1958 by one of the most devoted and exceptional Torremolinos native and football fan: D. Pedro Navarro Bruna. And the name “Juventud” was given due the age of the squad members (most of them, very young people). So, they were enrolled for playing at first in the Young League and after years of hard work between different categories, they finally reached the Regional League with (almost) the original team.

Some of the members of this remarkable squad were: Pedraza, Blas, Jesús, Manolo García, Bruna, José Luis, Barreto, Antonio Díaz and Chico. Names that surely are well known by the fans because they made possible the football revival in Torremolinos city.

Due to certain incidents that occurred in “El Pozuelo” Municipal Field, a new task was given: to find a new name and identity for the emerging team. But in the meantime our beloved squad was known too under some other denominations: “Club Deportivo Torremolinos” and “Balompié Torremolinos”.

Season after season, the team increased its level until leading the province league, along another teams such as Puerto Malagueño and Olímpica Victoriana, teams that already disappeared in time, all of them were outstanding examples of the football community.

As soon as Mr. Enrique Bolín took over the club’s presidency, the team became a stronger opponent in the Regional Category, reaching the 3rd Division in the National Category, thanks to the efforts of its manager, Luis Pellicer.

In the Third Division, the team was benefited with the presence of some high level players, like Domingo (former member of the CD Algeciras), Toro (former member of CD San Fernando), Perdomo and Sosó (from Canarias), Miguelín and Oña (on loan from Melilla CD).

In 1969, the Youth team was born under “Los Leones” denomination. This team was founded by a man with close links to Torremolinos football activities: Vicente Peña Castillo. The team played under this name until 1975, date when they finally became part of the “Juventud de Torremolinos C.F.”. This young squad was the beginning for many leading players that later were part of Juventud de Torremolinos first team. Players like Vicente, Zambrana, Blanco, González, Pepillo and Tejada. That is the reason why Mr. Peña Castillo is considered the creator of El Torremolinos quarry.

In 1972, another group of friends founded “Nuevo Atlético Torremolinos”. This group was made up of residents from El Calvario: José Ramírez Márquez, Antonio Orosa Vega, Antonio Díaz Ramos and Ginés Guarde Ortega, who also performed as directors, coaching staff and other staff related to the club activities. They reached the Regional Category and with the authorization of “El Juventud” Directors, they built a booth for their equipment in the Municipal Field “El Pozuelo”, place where they carried out training sessions and played matches. They enjoyed of operational and administrative autonomy for three years, although in the end decided to remain under control of Torremolinos Club.
